Win Milena Michiko Flašar's New Book!

This week the Japanese-Austrian author Milena Michiko Flašar (1980) will present her new novel Ich nannte ihn Krawatte. (Verlag Klaus Wagenbach). Flašar has written two citybooks, for deBuren; one is a story about Ostend, and one is about Graz. She made her debut on the literary scene in 2008 with three impressive stories under the name Ich bin. In 2010 she published her first novel Okaasan – Meine unbekannte Mutter about the death of her dementing mother.

Her work is characterized by poetical observations and sensitive descriptions, and her style has been well received since her debut in 2008.

(Paul Jandl in Die Welt over Okasaan)

Flašar's latest novel is set in Japan, and deals with the relationship between a Kikikomori (a hermit) and a seemingly common office clerk, who nevertheless carries a story within him. Peter Pisa of Die Kurir awarded the novel with four stars and wrote about the characters and the author: ‘Und alle, alle möchte man umarmen – inklusive Milena Michiko Flašar, die wie "ihr" Hikikomori aus dem Schatten gesprungen ist.’ Die Presse calls Flašar a ‘junge, begabte Autorin’ and names Ich nannte ihn Krawatte a ‘beckettsche Grundstimmung’.
