citybooks Ypres – looking ahead

© Oliver LeuTogether with the museum In Flanders Fields, we are inviting five writers and a photographer to come together in Ypres on the grim occasion of the World War 1 jubilee. This spring, the Syrian poet Ghayath Almadhoun, the Algerian writer Maïssa Bey along with Kees ‘t Hart and photographer Oliver Leu spent time in residence in the Westhoek. Their citybooks will be published online from this summer onwards. In September, the Canadian author Joseph Boyden and Belgian author Catherine Vuylsteke will visit the city to each write a citybook of their own.

This is a first photo from the series of 24 images taken by Oliver Leu in Ypres. He trained his lens on The Brooding Soldier, the Canadian war memorial for the victims of the first gas attack at the Second Battle of Ypres. The complete photo series will soon be published online.

Meet the author

During their citybooks residencies, Almadhoun, ‘t Hart (photo) and Leu spent an evening as guest speakers at the library of Ypres.  Catherine Vuylsteke will also strike up conversation about their work over the course of a discussion evening during their residencies.

A date for your diary: the evening with Catherine Vuylsteke will take place on the 1st of October. The interviewer is Dirk Clement. The evening will also feature musical intermezzi.

>> We are sorry to inform you that the evening with Joseph Boyden on 17/9 has been cancelled.
