citybooks in progress │ A trip to Leeuwarden

Leeuwarden is the European cultural capital of the year 2018. In the context of Leeuwarden-Fryslân 2018, a new project of citybooks is taking place. Four authors and two photographers were invited to plunge into the Frisian capital, together with the local partners Explore the North, Lan fân taal and Leeuwarden Capital of Culture.

© Katja BohmThe Iraqi-Finnish author Hassan Blasim was the first to live in Leeuwarden for two weeks to write his citybook. Thursday December 7 in Leeuwarden, Blasim shared his first impressions of the city, his experiences as an internationally recognized author and his knowledge of Arabic literature. Afterwards, the audience had the chance to ask questions. February 14, Blasim will perform again, this time in Brussels and in conversation with Belgian author Annelies Verbeke. They will talk about their life and work and Blasim will also read from his latest short story collection Lijkententoonstelling (The Corpse Exhibition, 2014), in which absurd dreams coincide with raw reality.

Currently the Belgian novelist and play writer Erik Vlaminck is residing in Leeuwarden. Friday February 16, at the end of his stay, he will present a part of his story for citybooks in Hotel-Café 't Anker, together with a monologue from his novel De schande en de keerzijde (2014), a collaboration with Jos Geysels. This monologue tells the story of a homeless man in Antwerp. Harmonica player and singer-songwriter Tollak Ollestad will perform in between and after the readings.

These three texts will be published soon and later on the other artists will be announced. All citybooks Leeuwarden will be made available in Dutch, English, Friesian and in Blasim’s case also in the original Arabic version.
