Cities in the mind – citybooks authors in Eindhoven

citybooks is hitting the road! deBuren, together with local organisations, is organising a series of literary evenings at which citybook authors will appear as guests. The first evening will take place on the 7th of December in Eindhoven, under the name Steden in het hoofd (Cities in the Mind).

Everyone has a mental image of cities like Venice, Skopje and Tel Aviv. But what do you do with the cities in your mind when you’re asked to write a story or a poem about them? deBuren and 040schrijvers invite Ester Naomi Perquin, Rebekka de Wit, Ronny Someck, Willem van Toorn and Ineke Holzhaus to deliver a literary response to just this question.

The evening

Cities are more than dots and smudges on a map. They are the products of history, of the landscape, and of the forces of nature. Some are stationed at the centre of historical narratives, others seem to shelter in the slow passage of time.

Cities are also present in our minds. Almost everybody has an idea of what Tel Aviv, Venice, or Skopje might look like. Settled figuratively or literally along planes of fracture, they make us nervous, alert. But there are other places that give us calm, a feeling of peace and of optimism. A seemingly undamaged village, a landscape adorned with rivers.

What do you do with the cities in your mind when you’re asked to write a story or a poem about them? Writers describe not only the things that announce themselves to our senses, but also seek out the sense (the ‘soul’?) of a place itself. They go to earth in a city, or they escape her.

Rebekka de Wit will read from her citybook about Venice and Ester Naomi Perquin will issue a one-person travel pack for Bucharest. Poets Ronny Someck, Willem van Toorn and Ineke Holzhaus will read from their own work and will share their thoughts on city literature. Alongside all of this, we will present a number of City One Minutes from these same cities.
