There is a palpable sense of the past in Semarang: though you may not hear a Semaranger tell you that he is proud of his city, the many commemorations and festivities that are held to preserve its history tell another story. Widya Mitra, the local partner of citybooks Semarang, is involved in a variety of events.

In selecting participating artists, our primary aim was to offer a multicoloured variety of perspectives. Flemish writer Bouke Billiet had never visited a tropical country before, while his Dutch colleague Gustaaf Peek has the tropics in his blood. They were guests at the beautiful Hotel Ciputra, right on the lively Simpang-Lima Square. One-time pig farmer and gallery owner Tubagus P. Svarajati was born and raised in the Chinese quarter and tells the history of his family, while the young writer Candra Dewi returns to a past that she could not possibly remember herself. Triyanto Triwikromo, journalist and poet, writes a text on the great moments of that history.

Of course, alongside the literary contributions, there are more beautiful images, too. Illustrator and photographer Dadang Pribadi reflects on what the city means to him, while videographer and cinematographer Rizki Lazuardi offers a colourful image of the city and the residents of Semarang.

With its many faces, Semarang offers a multitude of memories. Via citybooks, and through the fruitful collaboration between Widya Mitra, the Erasmus Taalcenturm, the Erasmus Huis, the Dutch Embassy and deBuren, these old memories will become the shared heritage of a new generation.

Ribuan wajah Semarang menawarkan beribu kenangan. Lewat citybooks dan kerja sama erat antara Widya Mitra, Erasmus Taalcentrum, Erasmus Huis, Kedutaan Besar Kerajaan Belanda dan deBuren, kenangan lama menjadi warisan bersama sebuah generasi baru.
